[Q&A] Thom Marrion (Beyond Human)

[19:23] <+Thom> Anyway, I'm Thom Marrion, writer of Beyond Human for Eden Studios.  This is going to be teh general powers sourcebook for their Unisystem and pretty much teh first Unisystem book not tied to a particular campaign setting or franchise
[19:23] <+Thom> done
[19:23] <~Dan> Thanks, Thom!
[19:23] <~Dan> Need us to repost our questions?
[19:23] <+Thom> Also, I can't spell THE when I type to fast :)
[19:25] <+Thom> Yes, though I think the first question was when it was coming out.  I am putting the finishing touches on the last chapter now (big giant superhero setting), playtest should be done by the end of the year and then it is up to George.t
[19:25] <+Sutter> :D
[19:25] <~Dan> Yup, that was the first one. :)
[19:26] <+Thom> I know he has at least one new franchise that he wants to use with Beyond Human, so he is as eager for it to come out as everybody else.  I would say definitely 2013 for the release.
[19:26] <+Thom> done
[19:26] <+Silverlion> Can you tell us anything about the superhero setting?
[19:27] <~Dan> [19:19] <~Dan> And, in a broad sense, what will it contain?
[19:27] <~Dan> 19:19] <+JMThompson> What power level of superheroes will it emulate, Superman/Wonder Woman / Captain Marvel, or will it stay in the mid range group?
[19:27] <~Dan> (Question pause.)
[19:28] <+Thom> Yes.  My personal philosophy on superhero settings is that it is the one genre where you can get away with everything.  It actually could make sense for Hercules to fight Dracula aboard a giant Nazi robot infested with alien zombies.
[19:28] <+Thom> so the superhero setting has notes for including all teh other settings in teh book.
[19:28] <~Dan> Awesome. :)
[19:29] <+Sutter> Indeed!!
[19:29] <+Thom> The basic cape and mask stuff is a giant crossover of all the Golden Age public domain superheroes and their descendents

[19:30] <~Dan> wb, Thom!
[19:31] <+Thom> If you are familiar with th power settings from Armageddon (pre-heroic, heroic, legendary, mythic, and there is also one beyond that called cosmic), the default setting for teh superhero world is mythic.
[19:32] <~Dan> Holy crap. O.o
[19:32] <+Thom> So, that would be most of your standard Marvel and DC characters
[19:32] <+Sutter> Indeed!!
[19:32] <+Thom> But there are rules for Cosmic level, which would be your Superman and Phoenix types
[19:32] <+Thom> done
[19:32] <+JMThompson> I am not familiar with Armageddon.
[19:33] <~Dan> JMT: You should read my review of it. :D
[19:33] <+JMThompson> I just recently got a copy of Terra Primate based off a review I read 5 years ago. Im kind of slow :-)
[19:33] <~Dan> (Short version: Heaven, Hell, and everything supernatural in between vs. high-tech undead mutant Cthulhu Nazis.)
[19:33] <+Thom> Heroic is basically the level of Buffy and Angel, if you have ever seen those games from Eden.
[19:33] <+Geek2theRight> Dispie futurist end times setting, sort of. Lots of liberties taken of course.
[19:34] <+JMThompson> I have, own both Buffy and Angel.
[19:34] <+JMThompson> Along with Ghosts of Albion, Eldritch Skies and Army of Darkness
[19:34] <+Silverlion> I need to pick up Eldritch Skies.
[19:35] <+Silverlion> Anyway, so its going to have Golden Age characters, not new ones as examples?/
[19:35] <~Dan> (Black Terror. Black Terror. Black Terror. Black Terror.)
[19:36] <+Thom> It is going to have a setting that starts with a golden age and ends up in modern times
[19:36] <+Thom> Yes, Black Terror (as well as the Terror Teams of All Nations, sort of my riff on Batmen of All Nations)
[19:36] <~Dan> Yes!!!
[19:37] <~Dan> And the Green Lama...?
[19:37] <+Silverlion> I see. Green Lama?
[19:37] * ~Dan high-fives Sil. :D
[19:37] * +Silverlion returns it.
[19:38] <+Thom> and Green Lama, though I am still undecided on whether or not Tibet will be defended by  a Green Lama Corps.  Some things are too silly even for me.
[19:38] * ~Dan chuckles
[19:38] <~Dan> So basically, the whole Project: Superpowers crew?
[19:39] <+Silverlion> Heh.
[19:39] <+Thom> The Nedor superheroes are the big private superhero team and the Fox superheroes work for the government

[19:50] *** ThomMarrion has quit IRC: Disintegrated: (Link: http://www.mibbit.com)http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client
[19:51] <+Thom> and with all that are the settings.  There is Psionic setting, a Gothic horror setting, a realms of faeries setting (otherwise known as Thom sneaks in the Book of Yes
[19:52] <+Thom> that should be Book of Yesod for all the Witch Craft fans)
[19:52] * ~Dan nods sagely
[19:52] <+Sutter> :D
[19:53] <+Thom> a 1950's alien setting, and a cosmic level setting of neolithic gods versus dragon and spirits (otherwise known as Thom sneaks in the Book of Netzach for all the WC and Armageddon fans)
[19:53] <~Dan> :D
[19:54] <+Thom> and then all of those settings can also be used with the superhero setting
[19:54] <+Thom> There is also a chapter of sample races
[19:54] <+Thom> done
[19:54] <+Sutter> I'm Dancing.....Thom.......
[19:54] <~Dan> I notice you didn't mention magic. Does that fall under the general powers section?

[19:59] <+Silverlion> Indeed.
[19:59] <+Silverlion> And the flexibility of powers.
[19:59] <+Silverlion> Its a shame really as Magical heroes may need spellcasting

[20:01] <+Thom> cafeteria style, though some of the basic things (like shooting blasts of whatever out of your hands) is designed yourself
[20:02] <~Dan> So something like a super-expanded version of Angel/GoA powers?

[20:20] <+Thom> mostly I think it was a desire to not reinvent the wheel on that one.
[20:21] <~Dan> And is it Victorian era?
[20:21] <+Thom> Exactly. Werewolves (or at least wolf shapeshifters), moroi and strigoi, and Frankenstein monsters (either a classic Unisystem version called a homunculus or a cinematic version which is your normal construct made of dead parts

[20:22] <+Thom> The setting is ruritanian fantasy set in the fictional nation of Banat (which was actually a real country for about ten minutes), with options for play throughout the twentieth century (ala Universal monster movies)
[20:23] <+Thom> as an added bonus, Banat has a Doctor Doom type monarch.  Just because
[20:23] *** Aemilia is now known as Lioness
[20:23] <~Dan> :D
[20:24] <~Dan> What are moroi and strigoi?
[20:24] <+Thom> Moroi and Strigoi- since Unisystem already has about a half dozen different vampires or so (and this point is used to illustrate how to design races based on real world mythology) I went with two vampire types that haven't been used by Eden before
[20:25] <+Thom> Moroi are living people with the Power of Energy Vampirism, Strigoi are basically spirits with their own form of Energy Vampirism that they use to manifest physically

[20:44] <+ThomMarrion> Yes.  As I mentioned, there are different power levels (heroic, legendary, mythic, etc)
[20:44] <+ThomMarrion> Each setting has teh choice of either powered or non-powered characters
[20:45] <+ThomMarrion> so you could have someone who could fly or lift cars in the same campaign as someone whop never misses a shot or is the world's best detective or smartest man.
[20:46] <~Dan> Is there a "power" associated with have ridiculously high skills, or is it just a matter of how you spend your points in general?
[20:46] <+ThomMarrion> as far as last Unisystem book, I honestly don't know.  Like I said, George has plans for follow-up settings that use Beyond Human as the core book, but I don't know the actual details on those
[20:46] <~Dan> (There's a "Super-skill" power in Basic Roleplaying, for example.)
[20:47] <+ThomMarrion> No superskill per se, but if you build a non-powered character, you have so much more points to spend on skills, especially at the higher level campaigns
[20:47] * ~Dan nods

[20:56] <+Thom> Maybe a few more questions
[20:56] <~Dan> What are the sample races?
[20:57] <+Thom> The Alfar Sidhe (Fey folk), Homunculi- human/spirit hybrids made from dead bodies, basically the WitchCraft version of Frankenstein's monster)
[20:58] <+Thom> Subterraneans who nullify powers
[20:58] <~Dan> I can dig that.
[20:58] <+Thom> a hard science more realistic alien to balance out the goofier ones in the fifties setting
[20:59] *** ThomMarrion has quit IRC: Disintegrated: (Link: http://www.mibbit.com)http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client
[20:59] <+Thom> and a cosmic level nomadic alien, sort of Silver Surfer meets Starman (Jeff Bridge, not Jack Knight)
[20:59] <~Dan> Sweet.
[21:00] <~Dan> Is there any sort of equipment list?
[21:00] *** KurtWiegel has quit IRC: Disintegrated: (Link: http://www.mibbit.com)http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client
[21:00] <+Thom> there is an expanded list from what has been in previous unisystem books, with the vehicle rules and weapons that cover everything from pointy wooden stocks to atomic bombs
[21:01] <~Dan> Great!
[21:01] <+Thom> so there are some sci fi weapons thrown in with teh usual guns and swords
[21:01] <~Dan> One last question from me, at least: can the book handle "omni-powers" like Green Lantern's ring, the Power Cosmic, super-magic, etc.?
[21:01] <+Thom> the basic idea was to be able to handle everything from fantasy to hard science fiction to horror to pulp
[21:02] <+Thom> Last question- yes.
[21:02] <~Dan> Awesome. :)
[21:02] <+Thom> In addition to the regular powers, there are elemental powers which are group powers bought in levels
[21:03] <~Dan> Is there anything we haven't covered that you'd like to mention?

[21:04] <+Sutter> This book is going to decimate all in it's path!
[21:04] <+ThomMarrion> and there is even a cosmic elemental power used by galactic policemen (CJ came up with that one)
[21:04] <+ThomMarrion> done
[21:04] <~Dan> Great!

[21:05] <~Dan> Well, first of all, I'd like to thank you for taking the time to talk to us, Thom.
[21:14] * +jcfiala_ grumbles.
[21:14] <+ThomMarrion> Absolutely, it's been a blast
[21:14] <+Sutter> Yes, thank you!
[21:14] <~Dan> Secondly, given the connection problems, I'd like to offer you a return visit if you're inclined.
[21:14] <+technoshaman> has the question been asked on how powers will be done? will the be part of qualities or its own system like some of the magic system in past eden games?
[21:14] <+ThomMarrion> Maybe we can do another one of these once the book sees print
[21:14] <~Dan> He did answer that, tech. The log will be up shortly.
[21:14] <+technoshaman> ok
[21:14] <~Dan> Thom: Absolutely.
